South Auckland Middle School (SAMS), known by its gifted Māori name Te Paerangi ("Steps to Excellence"), was founded from a vision to provide a different kind of education for young adolescents—one that recognised that students in Years 7–10 have unique developmental, academic and social needs.
The concept for South Auckland Middle School grew from the work of the Villa Education Trust, which had previously established Mt Hobson Middle School. The aim was to create a school specifically designed around the middle years of education, combining:
Rather than following a traditional intermediate or secondary school model, the founders believed young adolescents would thrive in an environment specifically designed for this important stage of development.
South Auckland Middle School officially opened in Term 1, 2014 on Mahia Road in Manurewa.
It began as one of New Zealand's Partnership Schools (Kura Hourua), opening with a small roll and building its community from the ground up.

One of the defining moments in the school's history was receiving its Māori name:

Following the Government's decision to end the Partnership School model, South Auckland Middle School successfully applied to become a Designated Character State School.
In August 2018, the Minister of Education established South Auckland Middle School as a designated character school, and it began operating under this status from 2019 while retaining its distinctive educational philosophy and character.
Since opening, Te Paerangi/SAMS has developed a reputation for creating a close-knit learning community where every student is known.
